EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS/
SYMPTOMS
PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Combustible.
NO open flames. NO contact with strong oxidizers.
Powder, water spray, foam, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION Finely dispersed particles form explosive mixtures in air.
Prevent deposition of dust; closed system, dust explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting.

EXPOSURE
PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST! AVOID EXPOSURE OF (PREGNANT) WOMEN!

  • INHALATION
  • (see Ingestion).
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.
  • SKIN
  • MAY BE ABSORBED!
    Protective gloves.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap. Refer for medical attention.
  • EYES

  • Face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
  • INGESTION
  • Bleeding, pinpoint purplish-red spots, bleeding on the skin (see Notes).
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Induce vomiting (ONLY IN CONSCIOUS PERSONS!). Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Sweep spilled substance into sealable containers. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place (extra personal protection: self-contained breathing apparatus).
Provision to contain effluent from fire extinguishing. Separated from strong oxidants, food and feedstuffs. Tightly closed. Keep in a well-ventilated room.
Unbreakable packaging; put breakable packaging into closed unbreakable container. Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

    PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
ODOURLESS, TASTELESS, COLOURLESS TO WHITE CRYSTALLINE POWDER.

    PHYSICAL DANGERS:
Dust explosion possible if in powder or granular form, mixed with air.

    CHEMICAL DANGERS:
Reacts with strong oxidants causing fire and explosion hazard.

    OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
TLV: ppm; 0.1 mg/m3 (as TWA) (ACGIH 1991-1992).
    PDK: 0.001 mg/m3 (USSR 1988).

    ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol, through the skin, and by ingestion.

    INHALATION RISK:
Evaporation at 20░C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly.

    EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
Exposure at low levels could cause hemorrhage. The effects may be delayed.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Does cause serious reproductive toxicity in humans. Animal tests show that this substance possibly causes malformations in human babies.
    PHYSICAL
    PROPERTIES
    Decomposes below boiling point:

    Solubility in water: none
Vapour pressure, Pa at 21.5░C: 9
    Relative vapour density (air = 1): 10.6
    Relative density of the vapour/air-mixture at 20░C (air = 1): 1.00

    ENVIRONMENTAL
    DATA

    NOTES
Warfarin is usually available commercially as the sodium salt. The physical properties above refer to the pure substance. Temperature of decomposition unknown in literature. Auto-ignition temperature is unknown in literature. The substance is combustible but no flash point is available in literature. Explosive limits are unknown in literature. The symptoms of bleeding do not become manifest until several days later. Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available. Do NOT take working clothes home. Athrombine-K, Brumolin, Compound 42, Coumadin, d-CON, Kumadu, Mar-frin, Maveran, Ratoxin, Temus W, Warf Compound 42, and Warficide are trade names.
